How Active Protection Shields Spacecraft Hulls
Patent Information
Helium Storage & Primary Control: Pressurized helium is stored in internal containment tanks. Upon atmospheric entry activation, the Master Control Valve (MCV) opens to meter pressurized gas into regional header lines.
Hierarchical SCU Automation: The Shield Control Unit (SCU) continuously polls hull thermal sensors. If a specific region experiences elevated heat flux or off-nominal boundary conditions, the SCU signals regional Distribution Manifolds (DMs) to adjust gas flow.
Dual-Flow Gas Dispenser Units (GDUs):
Normal-Flow GDUs: Mounted at leading edges and stagnation points, exuding gas perpendicular to the hull to push superheated atmospheric plasma away from the vehicle.
Parallel-Flow GDUs: Mounted along perimeter and downstream hull surfaces, exuding gas parallel to the surface to thicken the insulating boundary layer.
See the difference
Ablative vs. Active Shielding
Same vehicle, same reentry. The only thing that changes is the heat shield.
Top / Ablative heat shield
The surface burns away.
Today’s shields are built to char and erode. The edges glow white-hot, the surface burns and sparks and hot gas stream off the hull.
Bottom / Active shielding
The plasma never touches the hull.
Barrier gas flows out of the surface and forms a protective layer. The plasma is pushed away and flows around the vehicle.

CURRENT PHASE OF EXECUTION (Series A Focus)
Current Phase & Capital Deployment
Preliminary design of GDUs, DMs and other physical hardware, along with initial development of control algorithms and control system architecture.
Additive Hardware Prototype Printing: Fabrication of 3D-printed GDU matrices in high-temperature alloys and composite resins.
Cold-Flow Benchtop Testing: Fluid dynamic testing to measure pressure drop, dispersion patterns, and valve actuation response
High-Enthalpy Arc-Jet Preparation: Securing test window allocations at plasma arc-jet facilities to subject GDU arrays to >1,500°C hypersonic entry environments.
