STRATEGIC MISSION
Revolutionizing Reusable Thermal Protection
Atmospheric entry remains the single greatest bottleneck in sustainable space logistics. Current passive ceramic tiles and ablative materials suffer from extreme fragility, high maintenance costs, and prolonged turnaround times. Active Reentry Systems was founded to deliver high-cadence, low-cost thermal protection built for the modern space economy.
ABOUT ACTIVE REENTRY SYSTEMS
Enabling Next-Generation Earth-to-LEO-and-Return Spacecraft Operations
Founded in 2026 in Casper, Wyoming, Active Reentry Systems is an aerospace technology startup established with a clear, singular mission: to revolutionize space transportation by developing active thermal protection systems that make high-cadence Earth-to-LEO orbital returns safe, efficient, and economically viable.
Our Mission - Overcoming the Core Bottleneck of Orbital Reusability
For decades, atmospheric reentry has relied on passive thermal protection—either heavy ablative heat shields that burn away after a single launch or fragile ceramic tiles that require labor-intensive inspection and costly repairs between flights. Active Reentry Systems bridges this gap by commercializing the proprietary Active Protection type reentry heat shield detailed in the patent.
By actively exuding a protective working gas envelope across critical hull surfaces during peak reentry heating, our technology insulates spacecraft structures, deflects superheated atmospheric plasma, and eliminates single-use material degradation. This breakthrough dramatically reduces vehicle mass penalties while enabling true turnaround reusability for defense platforms, commercial payload capsules, and orbital logistics vehicles.
The Details
Technology Overview
Our patented design enables commercial cargo and orbital return capsules to achieve rapid flight turnaround without heat shield refurbishing, and provides thermal protection for high-speed test vehicles and national security platforms encountering sustained hypersonic thermal loads.
Open-Loop Gas Exudation
Uses pressurized helium stored in internal containment tanks to create a continuous protective gas envelope over exterior spacecraft surfaces.
Dual-Flow Dispersion
Utilizes Normal-Flow GDUs at leading edges to push high-temperature plasma away from the hull, combined with Parallel-Flow GDUs across primary surfaces to thicken the insulating boundary layer.
Autonomous Avionics Integration
Features a Shield Control Unit (SCU) that monitors real-time hull thermal sensors and dynamically adjusts gas distribution manifolds during entry trajectories.
